Skating Into Beaver: Girl's Ice Hockey

    Riley Nelson '14

This year’s winter athletics has a sport never seen before in the history of Beaver:  Girls’ Ice Hockey.  As its first season gets under way both the coaches and players are eager for what is to come.  “This season is pretty exciting because whatever we do is the foundation for the years to come,” says assistant coach Ryan Suga.  He adds, “It’s the first year, so support at any games would be a huge impact to the team as a whole.”  Though only just beginning, the girls are devoted and excited to play. The players practice Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings from 5:45 to 7:00 am at Newton Country Day School’s skating facility.  Their home games, on Wednesdays, are also held there. This year they face seven league teams, including Dana Hall, Milton Academy, Windsor, and Newton Country Day.  When I asked Freshman player, Nadia Bednarczuk, what she thought about the new program she replied, “It’s terrifying for new kids, but it’s enjoyable as well... I also like being a part of something new and exciting.  This year we might not be great, but there’s a lot of potential as we continue to develop a strong team.”  As this sport begins at Beaver,  be sure to mark your calendar for the first home game on January 6th versus Portsmouth Abbey!
